The AFL-CIO reaffirms its condemnation of sexual harassment as an illegal violation of human dignity.
The number of sexual harassment claims filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in 1993 was more than double the number filed in 1990. Ninety percent of harassment cases involved men harassing women, nine percent involve same sex harassment and one percent involve women harassing men. Surveys show that a large portion of working women have been sexually harassed at work, with figures ranging from 40 percent to 65 percent. The AFL-CIO must continue to work to prevent harassment and other forms of sex discrimination through education, enforcement of strong policies and state and federal laws and by fostering an environment that supports working women.
